HO Scale Ballast tip from:

For HO modelers who are ballasting track for the first time, why not try my
method. Don't use granulated stuff, just use flock material, similar to woodland scenics
ground cover. The colors I use are light grey and brown mixed together, but you use your
own colors. Now, here's the best bit. Use wallpaper paste (Heavy duty) mix a little into a
bowl of water, add a touch of white wood glue and tip in the flock. Mix it all together
(Just like wetmud) insert it into the tracks. When dried overnight, clean out the track
with a toothbrush, go over the tracks with a very fine wet&dry paper, and it's ready
for use. The beauty of this method is: 1) should you need to replace the track, all you
have to do is wet it, and up it comes, and 2) you won't need a JCB (Johson
Crow Bar?) to lift it and ruin your
baseboards. Hope this is of some help.
