Timber Ridge
Scenic N Scale layout in 8 sq. ft!
This is a relatively simple starter layout taking up about 8 square feet, constructed with basic tools and inexpensive materials. The layout was completed in about 10 non-consecutive working days, or about 40 total hours of working time.

Construction All the equipment and materials you need are at your local hardware or hobby store!
The base for the Timber Ridge is constructed from a simple sheet of Styrofoam insulation glued to a frame constructed of 1x2 pine. The fascia boards were cut from a 1/4" sheet of 2'x4'  plywood.

Scenery  These are inexpensive tools that can be used to carve styrofoam into a model landscape. Be sure to have a vacuum handy for the Surform and good ventilation for the hot wire tool!
I tried new techniques and products on this layout: I used Woodland Scenics plaster cloth material to form the terrain. To shape the hills, I used styrofoam packing peanuts, piled into basic shapes and then duct taped into place and covered with the WS plaster cloth. I also carved some of the foam with a Stanley Surform tool. Tan latex paint was applied directly to the Styrofoam and plaster and then ground foam, clump foliage and individual trees were attached with white glue.

Track
I used Woodland Scenics risers and roadbed, as well as Atlas sectional track and an Atlas through girder bridge. Turnouts are Atlas Custom Line with Caboose Industries ground throws. Hayes wheel stops made by Tomar Industries serve as spur bumpers.

Summary
This was a fun little project layout, with trains and materials costing a grand total of about $275.
