Colorado Eastern - Trestle Site
Remember back at the beginning of the Colorado Eastern? The plan was to feature a trestle at the very front of the layout, with scenery from inside the layout blending down and into the grounds of the perennial garden.

So as the layout took shape, the front open space was left until the very last - and I began to wonder how in the heck I was going to build a trestle.

Thankfully, the Internet came to my rescue and I discovered Paul's Trains at www.gardenrr.com. Paul builds all kinds of accessories for outdoor layouts: trestles, bridges, tunnel portals, abutments, retaining walls, etc.

PROJECT DATE: 11/11/03

So I placed my order for a trestle, and a few weeks later it was delivered. Paul's craftsmanship is amazing, and the trestle looked fantastic. He also included a lot of extra strip-wood so that I could make my own abutments to fit my exact space.

You will notice in the bottom photo that I have a lot of work left to do in order to build the trestle approaches. This is a good picture, as you can see all layers of construction: the framework, the wiring, the sub-roadbed and the roadbed, along with track and ballast. The large post on the right is a 4x4 tamper that I built to compact the earth.

The trestle arrives, fresh out of the box ... note the track, conduit and other supplies in the photo.... planning ahead pays off!

This photo shows how the trestle would fit in its future space - with some help from the dog, the rest of this space would get built up.
