Colorado Eastern - First Track
When the dirt started to get near the top of the framework on the left side of the layout, I got pretty excited about actually laying track.

After looking at some books and reading on-line forums and talking to various people, I decided that brass track would be sufficient - especially with the number of feeders I had installed. I purchased $130 of Aristo-Craft sectional track from G&G Trains in Leslie, MI - this included approximately a box and a half of 4' radius curves, half a box of 5' radius curves, two 5' straight, four 3' straight, four 2' straight and a handful of 1' straight pieces.

PROJECT DATE: 11/10/03

To build the sub-roadbed, I created a shallow trench between the outside walls of the layout and large rocks/granite. Then I filled the area with more dirt and then a layer of stone. This was followed by connecting the track to the wires and then pouring the crusher fines over the top of the track. I used a level to check the track for grade front to back and side to side before I added the next few pieces, then repeated the process.

The track wires feed to the outside of the layout, just above the weatherproof outlet, where I built a collapsible shelf for the transformer.

Total cost-to-date: $705 + $130 = $835

my helper is back to assist with the first track being installed!

Note the layout feeder wires and the weatherproof outlet.
