Colorado Eastern - Excavating
After designing the layout and staking out the location, nothing else can happen until the ground is prepared. This means that the sod needs to be removed so construction can start on a solid foundation of level earth: so it was time to move some dirt and grass! If this was all to be done by hand (30' x 30' x 8') I have to believe it would have taken at least a full day of shoveling and leveling.......

that's me, operating the sod-cutter

.......Fortunately I live near a great rental store  that happened to have a sod-cutter: special thanks to John and Bob at A-1 Rental in Ann Arbor, MI! Once I had the right tool for the job, I was able to cut the entire perennial garden and layout area in about 45 minutes on the Friday night of Labor Day week-end. After a football Saturday, we went to Lowes to buy lumber and supplies. Cost-to-date: about $40 for the sod cutter rental - worth every last penny, and approximately $200 for the lumber/plants.
